Hello fellow gardeners,
Firstly, we would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year at the Oak & 41st Community Garden.
Ringing in the New Year is always exciting as we get to shed away the previous year and open up all the fresh and exciting possibilities of a new one.
Even though we are officially in the first month of winter, the days are technically getting longer and spring will quickly be on the horizon!!
January is a great time to start mapping out your 2020 growing season. Setting aside some time to decide on what you wish to plant in the spring and throughout the summer will have you adequately prepared for the coming season, as before you know it, that time will be upon us and plants will be growing towards the sun.
Here are a few important garden notices:
SPRING GARDEN OPENING
The spring garden opening hasn’t got an official date yet. We are scheduling it for sometime in late March and early April, so tentatively mark it in your calendar and look out for the firm dates in the next mailouts. The spring garden opening is a great opportunity to meet fellow gardeners, get some plants in the soil and ask us any pressing growing questions. In addition, this event will serve as our official deadline for collecting any outstanding 2020 Garden Fees.
Note: Returning gardeners will keep the same beds as 2019.
PLANT POTS NEXT TO GARDEN BEDS
We observed that gardeners (throughout the 2019 season) were bringing extra plant pots to the garden and placing them around their beds. Unfortunately, this is not allowed (please refer to the garden rules https://www.communitygardenbuilders.com/gardeneragreement-gardenrules) We will be removing any extra plant pots in the next month. If you are one of the gardeners who has plant pots around their bed/s, please take some time to visit the garden in the next week to remove them if you wish to keep them or send an email to garden@communitygardenbuilders.com to state your plan for future removal.

GARDENING TIP: Sprouts
In the cold, dark months of winter it might seem near impossible that anything would grow. However, with just a few quick and simple steps you can be growing your own sprouts in your home to add to your meals.
Here are two helpful videos outlining how to grow sprouts in your own home.
