Valentine's Day isn’t just for humans! It’s a time to spread love and joy to all, including our furry friends. While you’re busy planning special gestures for your loved ones, don’t forget your loyal canine companion. What better way to celebrate than by making a delicious homemade treat for your furry friend?

This Valentine’s Day, whip up a batch of delightful and healthy homemade dog treats. They’re easy to make, require minimal ingredients, and will surely get those tails wagging in excitement. Here’s a simple recipe that your pup will love:

Recipe: Peanut Butter and Banana Dog Biscuits

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe banana

  • 1 cup oat flour (you can make this by grinding rolled oats)

  • ½ cup creamy peanut butter (make sure it does not contain xylitol, as it's harmful to dogs)

  • 1 egg

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven: Set it to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. Prepare the banana: Peel the banana and mash it thoroughly in a mixing bowl until it forms a smooth consistency.

  3. Mix the ingredients: Add the oat flour, peanut butter, and egg to the mashed banana. Stir well until all the ingredients are combined into a dough-like consistency.

  4. Roll out the dough: Sprinkle some oat flour on a flat surface and roll out the dough to about ¼ inch thickness.

  5. Cut into shapes: Use heart-shaped cookie cutters (or any shape you prefer!) to cut out the treats and place them onto the prepared baking sheet.

  6. Bake: Put the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for about 12-15 minutes or until the treats turn golden brown.

  7. Cool and store: Once baked, allow the treats to cool completely before serving them to your furry friend. Store them in an airtight container to keep them fresh for longer.

Remember, while these treats are safe and healthy, moderation is key. Treats should complement your dog's regular diet, so be mindful of the portion sizes based on your dog's size and dietary needs. If your dog has any allergies or specific dietary restrictions, consult your vet before introducing new treats.

This Valentine's Day, cherish the unconditional love your dog gives you every day by pampering them with these homemade goodies and maybe a walk down to one of our Vancouver Community Garden Builders Dog Parks. If you are in the mood to share the Valentines treats, please do not give any dog treats away without the permission of the dog owner.
