Spring is here at the Broadway & Alma garden and the growing season is really starting to kick off. There is a lot of uncertainty circulating around the city due to COVID-19 and we have some new rules and guidelines to follow so we can all stay safe and continue to garden.

We have updated our gardening guidelines to respond to COVID-19, and we ask that everyone read through and follow this new protocol.

Winter is soon to be officially over as the first day of spring is March 19th. We’re exciting to get the 2020 growing season started and keen to see what you all will be growing!

February has arrived and the registration has opened up for the Broadway & Alma garden. Don’t be fooled by the weather, spring is surely on it’s way, so make sure you start planning out what you’re going to plant.

January has arrived and so has the wet weather. Even though it’s cold, dark and gloomy outside, January is a great month to start planning out what you’re going to be growing of the 2020 season.

With December now upon us and all the garden beds to rest, we want to wish you all a Happy Holidays. We hope you’re able to kick back a reflect on all the great things you grew this season.

Well, it’s official, fall is really here! The first frosts have happened and most of the plants left over from the summer need to be pulled and put in the greens waste bin. If you’re planning to grow over winter, it’s a great idea to mulch your beds with the fallen leaves!

Fall has arrived and with it the cool-crisp mornings, leaves falling and the sun sitting lower in the sky. October is the month to give thanks for all the summer bounty, harvesting the last of your summer veggies and cleaning out your garden bed if you’re not planning on growing in it over winter.

With the fall season looming it’s a great time to start planting out the varieties of vegetables that will grow into the fall and over winter. Don’t miss this window of planting that will help you maximize this years harvest.

It’s official, the dog days of summer are here and it is hot and dry. Whether you’re growing vegetables or flowers it is incredibly important to keep them well hydrated throughout this month. Make sure you give the soil a good soaking so your plants won’t suffer through these hotter days.

The summer solstice has come and gone and it’s only getting hotter and dryer out there. This means it’s a good idea to keep a consistent watering schedule and also to plant out your heat tolerant crops.

There’s no denying it, the warmer weather is here to stay and with that is the need to consistently keep your plants well hydrated. It’s a great idea to set up a watering schedule for yourself so that your plants will stay strong and healthy throughout the month of June and into the summer.

Even though it still feels cold and wet outside don’t forget to get some compost in your beds and plant out your starts and seeds for the warm weather to come. You’ll have some serious social cred when you bring a fresh garden salad to the next spring potluck.

We'll be out on Saturday, April 6th at 1 p.m. to host a meet-and-greet event at the garden. This is a great time to meet your fellow gardeners, plant your first seeds and ask us any garden related questions you might have. We're excited to say that our friends from Victory Gardens will be out selling seeds and starts, so plan on taking advantage of their offerings. Rain or shine, but let's hope for sun!
