Happy New Year!

Hello Fellow Gardeners,

Happy New Year!  2020 was a year that I’m sure we will all not be forgetting anytime soon.  We hope that you were able to have restful and relaxing holidays, filled with laughter, good food and reflection.

January has arrived at the Oak & 41st garden and it is officially the first full month of Winter.

Even though it’s dark, cold and wet out there, it’s a great time to start thinking and planning what you will want to grow this spring and summer as the first day of spring is only 11 weeks away.

Here’s a quick rundown of garden updates:

  • Garden bed registration

  • Pots around garden beds

  • Winter growing at home

  • Help us grow

GARDEN BED REGISTRATION

We have already begun planning the 2021 registration and more information will be provided in early next year.

If you’re wondering whether you will be keeping the same garden beds you had in 2020, the answer is yes!  All returning gardeners will be invited to register for their beds.

Please let us know if you’re not choosing to garden with us in the 2021 growing season, as our waitlist has a lot of keen and eager gardeners waiting for a bed.

POTS AROUND GARDEN BEDS

This is a reminder to gardeners who have extra pots on the ground, around their beds.  We will be removing these from around the beds, as it impedes the ability to trim weeds and repair the garden beds in the warmer months.

If you want to keep your pots, please remove them from the garden by the end of January.

WINTER GROWING AT HOME

If you still have the urge to be growing food over the winter months, harvesting and making fresh salads and garnish, try your hand at growing fresh sprouts.  It’s a simple, low barrier way of growing a variety of fresh greens, sprouting legumes and bumping up your nutritional intake, all from the confines of your home.

Check out this article on growing sprouts at home, it will provide you with the basic rundown of the materials and methods needed to do this at home
